The Leicestershire Ethnic Minority Partnership (LEMP) is a unique infrastructure body established in 2001 to provide development support to Black Minority and Ethnic (BME) organisations and through this, to the communities which they serve.
It aims to create effective partnerships between the BME Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) and generalist infrastructure bodies and the statutory, private and public sectors and local communities. LEMP's vision is to strengthen communities and create a sustainable BME voluntary and community sector. To achieve this LEMP offers its services through newsletters, network events, website, outreach work and telephone advice.
LEMP's objectives are as follows:-
-
to undertake strategic development within the community through the BME Voluntary and Community Sector
-
to secure social, physical and financial resources for the sector
-
to increase BME participation in partnerships
-
to advocate and campaign to influence on behalf of the BME VCS
-
to ensure that services provided through BME organisations are recognised and supported
-
to support and advise the BME VCS at all levels.
-
to act as a mechanism for consultation by the statutory sector with the BME VCS

LEMP secured initial funding through the Government’s Infrastructure Development Change Up Program and more recently Capacity Builders. This funding is from the local consortia projects program and the pilot improving reach program, funding comes to an end in March 08.
The staff team and board members are actively seeking further funding from local statutory agencies and various grant making bodies. Although we were optimistic about securing future funding, due to the nature of our reserves and the uncertainty about future funding from April onwards the organisation was forced to implement a program of closure from the end of March 2008. However, as a small amount of funding has been secured for one year by the Leicestershire County Council we have moved to alternative premises from the beginning of April 2008. This funding has allowed Prakash Panchal (CEO) and Panita Chohan (BME Partnership Development Officer) to continue working on a part time basis. Even though we are still in a period of uncertainty LEMP staff and board have a full commitment to securing our objectives highlighted above so as to meet the current and future aspirations of the ever growing and changing BME third sector in the city, County and Rutland.
LEMP has access and contact with over 500 of its stakeholders and the
small staff team are working to ensure their needs are met.
As part of this process we are currently developing a number of strategies to ensure that this happens. If you require any further information then please do not hesitate to contact one of the staff team.
The organisation is also now playing an active part in a number of key partnerships in the City and County, together with being in a position to be able to offer support and assistance to both statutory organisations and the BME Voluntary and Community Sector.
If you would like to get involved or receive any additional information with regards to LEMP then please contact us.
